 Volunteer Opportunities

Greeter for Films, Lectures

Purpose:
Responsiblities: This position will greet attendees and help direct them to the different activities happening on the 3rd floor of the Center House, which include the lecture series, the film series and some of the workshops. This position will also be responsible for running the films, using the equipment provided and already setup.
Location:Center House 3rd floor
Reports to:Programming Chair
Qualifications:Punctuality, comfortable with greeting people. An interest in films and/or lectures is helpful, but not required.
Time commitments: 3 hours shifts, but that could vary - need coverage from 11:30-5:30 on Saturday and Sunday (but could use someone as early at 10:45 on Sunday)


Lead Decorator

Responsiblities: Lead the design and implementation of Arab Fest theme throughout the Seattle Center/Festal event with the use of fabric and other media to create festival atmosphere.
Qualifications: Experience with designing backdrops and laying out signage for a large indoor/outdoor event.
Time commitments: 2-4 hours per week (will increase the week before the festival)


Children's Activities Coordinator

Purpose: Act as point person for all children's activities, reporting to the Programming Chair
Responsibilities: Point of contact for the Seattle Art Museum, the proposed workshops and possibly more activities. Work with Spelling Bee/Storytelling Coordinator (Afifi) when drafting a schedule. The goal is to have activities for a range of age and gender groups. Draft a schedule of events, then work with the programming chair to finalize the schedule.
Qualifications: Commitment to providing appropriate cultural learning activities for girls and boys ages 4-18. Ability to clearly communicate both ideas and the details to go with them. Ability to recruit others is a plus. Ability to work within a budget.
Time commitments: Depends on the coordinator -- they could be overseeing both full days, or they could recruit a cadre of parents or other interested volunteers to help. This position is expected to participate in regular programming committee meetings and communications.


Stage Manager-multiple positions available

Responsiblities:Duties: coordinate with performers, MCs and sound and stage technicians to ensure performances go on stage on time and end on time. Will report to a Lead Stage Manager and the Programming Chair.
Qualifications:Punctuality, ability to multi-task, calm demeanor under pressure. It is helpful if you have some kind of stage or technical theatre experience, but not necessary.
Time commitments:3 or 4 hour shifts


MC for the Arab Festival

Purpose: Welcome guests and introduce artists while stage crew is setting up for the next act. May require some ad-lib information/advertising about festival activities to help attendees be aware of the various venues at the festival.
Note: there are two stages that need MCs, plus MC's to introduce the lecture and/or film series.
Responsibilities: Must be punctual and show up 30 minutes or more prior to assigned time. Must remain in the area assigned and the stage manager must know where you are at all times.
Qualifications: Comfort with public speaking; ability to greet everyone in Arabic is a plus, but not required.
Time commitments: Most shifts are two hours; longer is possible. May require attending a pre-festival volunteer meeting for all stage crew.


Festival Photographer/Videographer (could be more than one person)

Purpose: Will take photos of all aspects of the festival and/or video selected segments
Responsibilities: Commit to being onsite for the full shift or shifts and release all photo and/or video materials with full rights to the Arab Center of Washington. Reports to Festival Manager.


CD producer

Purpose: To create a CD for sale at the festival
Responsiblities: The person will work with the Program and Fundraising committee chairs. Tasks include 1) securing digital copies of songs (with artist permission), 2) compiling them into a playlist to be burned onto a CD, and 3) working with a vendor to produce copies. The job may also include cover art production. You will be raising the profile of our amazing performers while helping raise money to offset costs of the festival.
Qualifications: Tech-literate person with ability to compile a music CD that will showcase festival performers


Cooking Class Coordinator

Purpose: to help coordinate cooking classes taught by Arab locales
Responsiblities: contact members of the community to volunteer to demonstrate a recipe, purchase/coordinate supplies and food for the class, relay event date,times, location and cost to the Arab Center administrator
Qualifications: ability to coordinate an event
Time commitments: at the coordinators discretion, we would like to have a minimum of one cooking event/year - each cooking class takes approximately 20 hours of coordination time - this includes 4 hours at the cooking event itself


Fashion Show Participants

Purpose: Model and/or lend clothing for the Arab Fashion Show
Time commitments: Afternoon on both days August 1st and 2nd of the festivals
