He said efforts were being made to increase the protected area by up to 15 percent, as the innovative instruments were used to protect the ecosystem.

Speaking to a seminar via the video link hosted by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) titled “Funding Arrangements for Ecosystem Restoration” as part of World Environment Day falling June 5, held at the ‘University Government College here, he said the government is focusing on nature-based solutions for restoring ecosystems to benefit people and the planet.

He revealed that last week Pakistan issued Euro Green Bonds worth $ 500 million. “The resources generated by these bonds will be used to provide green energy. Likewise, Pakistan has set up an Ecosystem Restoration Fund which will create 200,000 green jobs,” he added.

Malik Amin Aslam said Pakistan will start dialogues with some bilateral lenders for an against nature debt swap, adding that Pakistan would be the first country to opt for this financial instrument for its nature performance.

He said it was Pakistan’s honor to host global celebrations in recognition of its promising interventions for the preservation of the ecosystem.

On June 4, the official launch of the United Nations Decade for Ecosystem Restoration would take place from the United Nations platform, he added.

Punjab Finance Minister Makhdoom Hashim Jawan Bakht said the country’s contribution to global air pollution was negligible, but it was among the top five countries most affected due to climate change.

The minister said that the world community recognizes Pakistan for its commitment and efforts to protect the environment.

He said the PTI had converted 150 million hectares to green land and was aiming to move to 30% green energy. He said that the Lahore aquifer was running out and to fill it it was important to create a lake around Lahore.

He said Lahore city’s habitat has changed dramatically, however, it will be the first city to monetize water to manage its waste.

He said green finance was growing faster because in the next two years it would cover the $ 2 trillion market. “In Lahore, smog was a major concern. We, by declaring smog a calamity, have placed restrictions on traditional brick kilns and moved them to the latest zigzag technology, ”he said.

The minister revealed that the Punjab Environmental Endowment Fund had been established and that five billion rupees had been allocated to it.

SDPI Executive Director Dr Abid Qayyum Suleri said Pakistan, despite being one of the least polluting countries, had been hit hard by climate change. “It is the polluters’ duty to pay for ecosystem restoration; Pakistan calls for a green climate fund and plans to initiate a debt swap for nature’s performance,” he said.

Suleri added that “Pakistan would work with countries and the United Nations to initiate nature performance bonds, as our performance in protecting nature is now visible in terms of the 10 billion tree tsunami.” He said no government alone can achieve the goal, but everyone needs to play a role in it as it is a shared responsibility, adding that public-private partnership is also a need. from the moment. He said the government of Punjab is taking effective measures to protect the environment.

During his speech, Provincial EPD Minister Muhammad Rizwan said that the PTI government has made serious efforts to combat environmental pollution and that today it is with great pride that the international community has gave environmental leadership to Prime Minister Imran Khan.

He said specific rules had been formulated for industry and other ministries for the first time by a government.

The Minister stressed that no government alone could cope with the situation, but that each individual, aware of their responsibility, must play a role in keeping the environment clean and protected.
