Seneca creates transformative $ 12 million foundation to support student-centered equity initiatives

“The Seneca community spoke with one voice in our reflections on how we, as an institution, could help build a world free from racism and discrimination, ”said Seneca President David Agnew. “We have heard that words are not enough, that we have to act.

“We are responding with a significant and permanent investment dedicated to building equity Seneca through concrete measures such as financial aid and support for students from racialized and equity-seeking communities. “

The name The Jane Fund reflects that of Seneca historical association with communities along North York Jeanne Street, including the long-standing Yorkgate campus serving the Jane-Finch community. that of Seneca The Board of Governors unanimously approved the creation of the Fund at its last meeting.

“The Jane Fund will be a lasting legacy and we invite like-minded individuals, businesses and organizations to join us in supporting student-focused EDI initiatives,” said President Agnew. “This will allow us to reach deeper into target communities and provide meaningful and lasting support to many more students.”

Among the initiatives that the fund will support:

  • Financial assistance to improve access for students from racialized communities seeking equity
  • Match external donations to establish or increase existing EDI scholarships and scholarships
  • Complementary services to help guide students in their post-secondary path
  • Academic programs targeting priority communities and neighborhoods
  • Other EDI initiatives such as community outreach; research projects; student mobility programs.

The Jane Fund is one of many initiatives that build equity Seneca. Others include student and employee demographics, revamped EDI training for students and employees, human resources and student policy reviews, and curriculum initiatives.
