Senator Mitch McConnell’s suicidal obstruction of anything Joe Biden wants to do, including specifically raising the debt limit to pay the country’s bills and maintain America’s credit, is the political equivalent of the hackers of the September 11 air blasting jumbo jets around the World Mall. For McConnell, it doesn’t matter if the world economy collapses because he’s holding the nation hostage, as long as it hurts Democrats. He is preparing the country for the second coming of Donald Trump, not exactly his most trusted political ally, but for McConnell and most Republicans, a more acceptable and manageable president than Biden or Kamala Harris.
At least McConnell is vaccinated, so even though he’s in a high-risk group as an advanced geezer, there’s a good chance he has a lifetime supply of monoclonal antibodies in his medicine cabinet and a portable intravenous infusion in its shoulder case. which when he’s in Texas he can trade in for an unlicensed handgun. Too bad McConnell was discredited as stupid by the also-vaccinated former president, so supporters of the latter may ignore the senator’s advice on getting vaccinated and believe they are helping thwart Biden’s ability to bring COVID under control.
The more people who get sick and overwhelm hospitals and die such a preventable horrible death, the less likely it is that a Democrat will be elected to anything and sooner all the Proud Boys and Bozos Bozos and Oath Keepers and three percent will be released from prison free. under the general Trump II amnesty for insurgents.
The fatal flaw in anti-taxist reasoning, which is not to reason but to react, is that the people most likely to suffer in all respects from their vaccine refusal are themselves. The worst epidemics of the latest waves of the COVID crisis are in the red zones, the strong right-wing Republican states that voted decisively for Trump last time around. They put a finger in the collective eye of the Democrats by shooting themselves in the foot with their Texas handguns. It’s these highly unvaccinated MAGA-Americans who drop like flies in a Black Flag blizzard (“Kills Bugs Dead” in the immortal words of poet and former publicist Lew Welch). Proudly anti-Biden, anti-Democrat, anti-science ignorant do for Democrats what Democrats never could: kill themselves as the opposition.
As the most reactionary red-blooded Trumpian states are torn apart on the self-taught rack of the pandemic, and the Republican population is decimated by their preventable deaths, demographic (and largely democratic) change that horrifies them, the growing proportions of people from color and immigrants everywhere, will only accelerate. They make the “replacement” they fear more likely by voluntarily acquiring and dying from the deadly virus.
As Britons painfully learn of the catastrophic consequences of Brexit, the attempt to protect a dying old order by circling the wagons, when the wagons are obsolete, will only lead to isolation, self-decline and to the shortage of everything. Trying to get out of the small democratic United States where people can easily vote and get vaccinated, Republican geniuses, in the name of individual freedom, are playing Russian roulette and clearing their own ranks of voters who could bring back their strong man for an encore.
I come to bury such Republicans, including in particular the vaccinated but no less vexatious Senator McConnell, and wish them success in catching COVID and freeing themselves from their misery, a misery they could easily have avoided. Like the Brexiteers and the January 6 Capitol attackers, like their elected leaders who should know better but don’t care as long as they gain absolute power, they are well on their way to destroying their own country. I salute their freedom to resist vaccination because with any luck they will only destroy themselves.
