Stone Ocean changes booth names in Netflix version: explained

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure hasn’t shied away from naming a number of its characters from famous songs, rock stars, and bands, but it can cause problems when it comes to bringing the anime franchise to the West. . With Netflix recently integrating Stone Ocean into its streaming service, similar changes were made to Jolyne Cujoh’s adventure and we thought we would take the opportunity to break down some of the key differences between the original translation and this new version.

Just like Giorno Giovanna’s stand in Golden Wind, Jolyne’s stand was named after Ocean of stone in the English translation but was actually called Stone Free in the original Japanese series. On top of that, Jolyne’s friends had to receive similar, albeit much more drastic, changes in order to get around potential issues that would result from keeping their original names. Ermes Costello, the fellow inmate at Green Dolphin Street Prison, was able to keep her original name in the English translation, but her Stand, Kiss, had to be changed. Of course, Ermes’ Stand is named after the prolific rock band that has toured the world for decades, instead calling themselves “Smack”, though the wild power of the Stand remains.

Jolyne’s other ally, Foo Fighters, is actually a booth himself, but in the English translation he is referred to as “FF” which also allows them to avoid any issues. Another of Jolyne’s new friends, Weather Report, changes its name to Weather Forecast, although this one ultimately seems unnecessary but better safe than sorry.

The enemy stands that Jolyne and her friends encounter all have major name changes with Marilyn Manson Debt Collector, Goo Goo Dolls, Manhattan Transfer and Whitesnake being changed to Mary Lynn Manson Debt Collector, GG Dolls, Downtown Transfer and Pale Serpent for to name a few. As the series continues into the future,

Although the following booths have not been confirmed to arrive in the future of Ocean of stoneIf the anime adaptation continues to follow the trajectory of its source material, expect Limp Bitzkit, Earth Wind Fire, Jail House Rock, and Stairway To Heaven all to receive name swaps. Quite hilarious, Limp Bitzkit specifically received a name change in the video game, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven, who introduced it as “Flaccid Pancake”,
