Texas State Presents | San Marcos record

Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Black and Latino Playwrights Celebration (BLPC), Artistic Director Eugene Lee will perform August Wilson’s “How I Learned What I Learned” from September 8-23 in support of the new endowment fund.

To commemorate the BLPC’s 20th anniversary, the Texas State Department of Theater and Dance created an endowment to fund the effort permanently. Artistic director, alumnus and Broadway veteran Eugene Lee will take the stage of the newly renovated Evans Auditorium to perform the autobiographical work of 2022 Distinguished Achievement winner, August Wilson.

Lee will collaborate with guest director and “How I Learned What I Learned” co-designer Todd Kreidler to raise funds for the endowment and celebrate Wilson’s legacy in American theater.

BLPC has filled a void in American theater for 20 years by providing talented Black and Latino playwrights with the opportunities and resources to develop their unproduced plays. The partnership between the profession and higher education has had a striking impact.

Additionally, BLPC helps foster the next generation of Black and Latin voices through the development of unproduced pieces. Developed plays went into production in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Milwaukee, Dallas, Houston, Austin, Ithaca, Tempe, and Sacramento. Featured BLPC playwrights have been recognized by American Theater magazine and became writers for shows produced by Starz, Fox, Netflix and the Oprah Winfrey Network.

BLPC has gained national recognition for its work, having received three grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, several Humanities Texas grants, and a multi-year grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

With the creation of a Distinguished Achievement Award in 2012, BLPC paid tribute to nationally acclaimed writers such as Douglas Turner Ward (Tony winner and founder of Negro Ensemble Company), Luis Valdez (playwright and founder of El Teatro Campesino ), Jose Rivera (Oscar-nominated writer), Regina Taylor (Golden Globe winner), and Josefina Lopez (Humanities Award for Writing).

The Texas State Theater Department invites everyone to Lee’s performance of “How I Learned What I Learned” by August Wilson from September 8-23 at the Evans Auditorium. Tickets are available to the public for $20, faculty and staff for $15, groups of more than 10 people for $15, and students are entitled to one free ticket. For more ticket information, visit txstatepresents. com or call (512) 245-6500. All ticket proceeds will be used to support the BLPC endowment.
